Wedding Private Last Dance + Sparkler Sendoff
One of the wedding trends that we are seeing recently is what we call a “Private Last Dance” where guests are asked to leave 15-20 minutes before the end of your reception so the two of you can dance one last song all by themselves in the room with just your photographer (and DJ).
Maybe this got popular on TikTok or The Knot, but there are a few issues with staging this at your wedding.
1. The room will be in various stages of disarray or clearing making your photo background a bit less than desirable.
2. Guests will be hesitant to leave early and gather their belongings to clear the room. This is like herding cats. Trying to get 100+ guests to leave will drag on and won’t happen fast – eating up a big chunk of your coveted 5-hour reception.
3. The one thing guests will agree on – there is never enough time to dance at weddings and cutting your 120 minutes of dancing down to only 100 minutes is a “BIG DEAL”
There are other ways to do this where your photos will be better and it won’t impact your dance time.
SOLUTION: Why not stage a private dance and room reveal before guests come in (during cocktail hour for venues where cocktail and dinner/dancing are in separate areas). You are already taking photos with your photographer (formals), it only takes 10 minutes to come in and stage this private dance photo with your room fully set and with the two of you photo-ready compared to “the end of the night sloppy”. There will be no need to miss even more dance time or to refresh your makeup, dress, and hair when you really just want to dance.
The second trend we are being asked to stage is the “Sparkler Send-Off” where your guests gather outside holding up lit sparklers in an arch as the two of you exit.
The sparkler send-off doesn’t impact your dance time nearly as much (we normally will play your last song about 10 minutes early and then ask guests to exit for the sparkler send-off.
Some Things To Consider:
1. There has to be a space outside (and ensure your venue allows sparklers before trying this) Do not try to do it under a tent or under an overhang of a building. It also can’t be raining as your guests won’t want to stand out in the rain.
2. You are going to have to pay your photographer to stay until the end of your reception (overtime charge normally applies)
3. Do not try to stage a sparkler send-off before the end. We had a couple that insisted on staging their send-off right after the end of dinner as they didn’t want to pay their photographer overtime. We lost between 30-40 minutes of dance time as we had to wait for guests to go outside, stage the photos and then convince them to come back inside to dance. It takes FOREVER to move guests from one space to another. We want to limit the “wedding aerobics” and moving guests back and forth as much as possible by arranging and staging all your special moments with that in mind.
