It’s kind of like going to see a concert with that 80s band where only 1 member in the band is actually from the original band lineup.

We were providing lighting for one tented wedding and the bride approached our light tech complaining about the “PURPLE” bleeding onto a nearby uplit barn structure that we were supposed to have in amber – come to find out – the band provided lighting was pointed in so many weird ways that it ruined the effect on the nearby structure. That’s why when we are hired to do lighting at a wedding that we require that we are the SOLE PROVIDERS of light for that wedding so we can manage all aspects and balance the effect each installation has on the wedding.

A band plays songs in 1 style (just ask me how many remixes I have of some of our more popular songs – it might be 3 or 6 different versions for different crowds or styles of mixing as a DJ). The band’s lead singer might sound great as Whitney Houston or just OK as Taylor Swift and just a POOR SUBSTITUTE for Bruno Marrs. As a Newport Wedding DJ – Bruno always sounds just like Bruno and that 2 Chain rap sounds just like when you hear it on Spotify. Bands might bring some stage energy to your wedding, but is the spotlight supposed to be on the band or should it be on the two of you? (They literally point all their stage lights ON THEMSELVES). As a wedding DJ – all our focus is on the two of you and the dance floor – not us. Any wedding DJ that LIGHTS UP THEIR OWN gear or stage should be avoided. It’s a bad sign that they think they are more important than their wedding couple in Newport. Don’t even get me started on those Hybrid Wedding DJs that are all the rage now!
I have listened to bands “Noodle” on the keyboard for an entire cocktail hour without actually playing a single actual song. When the dance floor is at it’s peak energy – that’s exactly when your band will take their 20 min break and give your wedding guests an opportunity to leave early. A wedding DJ has music playing the entire time and can even get your guests up dancing between courses or entertain half your guests at the end of the meal as we wait for the other half to finish their meal.

I’ve yet to hear a wedding band that could make an announcement or introduce in a couple without sounding like a CHEESY WEDDING SINGER. Once when we were providing lighting for a weeding, I watched as their wedding band stopped dancing, had the venue raise the lights (never good for dancing or atmosphere at your wedding) and wait 10 minutes while they tracked down the bride so she could toss her bouquet – EXCEPT the BRIDE DIDN’T WANT TO TOSS HER BOUQUET. It was a poorly planned moment at their wedding that everyone will remember (and not in a good way!). It was just painful to experience.

5. It All Comes Down To Price
A typical wedding band might be between $6,000 and $12,000 and you have to feed the 8+ band members that $150 meal (add that to the total price)
A good DJ might be around $2500-$3500, and a luxury DJ might be $4000 – $5000. You could hire a great luxury DJ and still have more than enough money left over to add uplighting, a photo booth and some lights in your tent and still be cheaper than hiring that cheesy wedding band.
